The LF30S is a versatile device that connects easily
to any consumer electronics component via coaxial
or composite connectors. Everything needed comes in
the box – transmitter, receiver, IR extender, power
adapters and cables. The LF30S is designed to transmit
a signal up to 150 feet. The signal range is probably
only met if the transmitter and receiver are in the
'line of sight' of each other meaning no obstacles
blocking the signal path.
Installation and IR Extender
The LF30S is easy to setup, especially since the transmitter
and receiver are clearly labeled. To begin, connect
the transmitter to the device that will produce the
audio/video (DVD player, satellite receiver, MP3 player)
signal. Connect the receiver to the device you will
watch or listen to the transmitted signal on. Turn
on the transmitter and receiver.
One nice feature with the LF30S was the IR extender,
which allows for operation of a device, like DVD player
or satellite receiver, from another room. The IR extender
plugs into the transmitter and comes with a sensor
that sticks to the transmitting device’s remote control
sensor. This is a convenient feature because operation
of a device from another room just makes sense for
this type of device.
Because of the IR extender, I could operate the DVD
player in my living room with the remote control while
watching it in my bedroom. I didn’t have any problems
with the remote control operation. It was as though
the device was in the same room as the remote control.
The key is to locate the remote control sensor, and
place the IR extender on it.
Transmitting and Receiving Signals
While I didn’t have room to test the 150' range, I
was able to receive a good signal from over 60' away
with a series of walls in between the transmitter
and receiver. Essentially, the signal went from one
end of the house to the other.
I used the LF30S to transmit video/audio from a DVD
player, satellite receiver and digital camcorder.
I was concerned that picture/audio quality would be
sacrificed by sending the signal through the open
air. However, any concerns were quashed because the
picture and audio were just as good as if played without
the LF30S.
I didn’t get much disturbance in normal use of the
LF30S. When transmitting the signal around corners
without adjusting the reception, the picture was slightly
scrambled and the audio had a light buzz. However,
most disturbances were easily corrected by adjusting
the antennas on the transmitter and receiver. Antenna
adjustment was easy, but might require two people
– one to adjust the transmitting antenna, the other
to offer feedback when an acceptable signal is acquired.
The only time I didn’t get any signal disturbance
without adjusting the antennas was when the transmitter
and receiver were in the ‘line of sight’ of each other.
Downside Issues To Address
There was a downside to the LF30S. While the receiver
connected to a device via coaxial and composite, the
transmitter only connected by way of composite.
Since the unit operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency,
it will conflict with many cordless telephones (not
cell phones). During the product test, I was not able
to get a dial tone on my cordless phone while the
LF30S was turned on. I did receive incoming calls,
but could not answer them on the cordless phone because
of the interference. This is something to seriously
consider. If the LF30S is only turned on when in use,
the conflict with cordless phones would be minimal.
Also, I had some problems with the reception, especially
when moving around the receiver. The disturbance was
minimal and ended when the movement ceased.
Another glitch was with the audio. At times, it was
difficult to get rid of the low buzz on the sound.
The noise wasn’t overpowering, but could be annoying
to some people if not corrected by adjusting the antennas.
Conclusion
Overall, I was impressed with the LF30S. I can see
how this device would come in handy for those wanting
to watch television or listen to music in a place
that isn’t equipped to do so otherwise, like in a
garage, by a pool or in a room not wired for cable/satellite.
Other uses could be listening to satellite radio in
the front yard, running computer audio to a stereo
on the other side of the house or sending a signal
from a camera to a monitor, like for weddings, parties
or security issues.
The bottom line is that this product works as good,
if not better, than I expected.

This is a general purpose remote control project with
using programmable PIC microcontrollers. Schematics
are shown for using infrared (RF) or radio (RF) media.
If you are not familiar with microcontroller programming,
you can use fixed encoder and decoder integrated circuits
instead. Wellknown such ICs are Holtek HT12D, HT12E
and Motorola MC145026, MC145027, MC145028.
Remote controls usually consist of encoder/decoder
parts connected to a transmitter/receiver module which
takes care of the transmission of digital signals
by radio or infra waves. The format of this project's
signal is designed to be ideal even for the cheapest
ASK RF modules (using 50% signal/silence ratio), and
it is similar to the Philips RC5 format used in infrared
remote controls. The transmitter has a varying number
of buttons and sends the states of these inputs to
the receiver. The receiver device decodes the message
and sets the outputs accordingly.

There are two different methods for encoding/decoding
channel information:

The information about which key is pressed is encoded
and sent.
You can press at most one key at a time on the encoder,
and only the code for the pressed key is sent to the
decoder. This is an efficient method for general remote
control
parallel channels please see older codecs for such
designs. The state of all inputs are encoded and sent.
The input to the encoder is the state of buttons or
TTL inputs. Every input channel state is encoded into
each message sent to the decoder (one bit per channel),
so TTL inputs can change asynchronously, and any number
and combination of buttons can be pressed and encoded,
the same state is reproduced on the decoder outputs.
This method is suitable for modeling AND remote control,
but messages are longer. Analog channels would also
be possible, but are not yet implemented

Current devices have 4 or 8 channels it means they
are capable of controlling the state of 4 or 8 switched
outputs. Each transmitter and receiver has an address,
and the transmitter address must match the address
of the receiver to control the channels. The transmitters
are capable of sending three different types of codes
for the available channels:
transmitting simple code indicating that the button
for a channel is pressed it can be used for momentary
or toggled channel outputs
transmitting channel ON codes it is used for turning
on latched channel outputs
transmitting channel OFF codes used for turning off
latched channel outputs
All the receivers have an indicator LED showing that
a valid packet was received. Receivers can have different
type outputs for each channel:
momentary output the channel output is turned ON while
the corresponding transmitter button is pressed
latched output the last received state is kept. The
channel output can be toggled on/off by a momentary
button press, or the output can be turned on or off
by specific ON/OFFtype transmitter codes
Combining different codetype transmitters with receivers
with different type channels, great versatility is
achieved. The possible combinations are described

Transmitter & Receiver Architectures:
Basic Building Blocks
Frequency Source (Carrier)
In order to make the information signal (e.g. data)
pass through the air, it must be modulated on to a
carrier signal whose frequency is well suited to the
propagation environment, conforms to the licensed
operating bands, and is sufficiently stable to allow
detection by a tuned receiver in the presence of interference.
Modulation
The method of imposing the information signal onto
the carrier signal is termed modulation and must be
accomplished cost effectively and accurately for maximum
range and minimum interference.
Amplification
The amplifier is a key part of the transceiver, and
must be efficient (dc power in to RF power out), low
cost, nonpolluting, and possibly linear. Output power
is dictated by regulation, range requirement, battery
life, cost and linearity considerations.
Antenna
The antenna is often the most poorly engineered part
of a radio system. Good design will ensure maximum
range, high amplifier efficiency (good matching),
good selectivity, minimal pollution, good interference
rejection, good sensitivity, reduced design headaches.
Reception
Key to the sensitivity, dynamic range and strong signal
handling properties of the radio is the receiver ‘front
end’. The main task is to boost weak wanted signals,
often in the presence of strong unwanted signals whilst
introducing minimal noise and distortion. In many
cases, some selective filtering is required to assist
this task.
Demodulation
The process of removing the information signal from
the carrier is termed demodulation. The challenge
is to design a circuit (or algorithm) that will achieve
this task optimally in the presence of noise, interference
and varying signal strength, frequency and phase,
whilst being compact, power efficient and cheap.

Supply
In the transmitter schematic, no ballast resistor
is shown because most small LASER power supplies already
have one built in. Yours may differ, and a resistor
may be needed.
The receiver should be kept away from bright lights.
You may want to put a piece of wax paper in front
of Q1 to keep the LASER from swamping it.
In order to get any decent amount of modulation,
you may need to drive T1 with more then a watt.
The circuit can be made to transmit computer data
with the use of two modem chips.
