As frustrating as having to use inverters in your car is (your car generates DC electricity, which needs to be converted to AC, which is converted back to DC by your electronics), they can be such an awesome convenience. And even a couple of years ago you couldn't expect to easily get a 150watt inverter, let alone one for $40, like Wagan's 150watt SmartAC inverter. It peaks at a 450W surge; if you're using near that much probably means you've got a power strip and a mobile office all jacked in, which is both enormously stupid and totally awesome of you.

I think that should be AC > DC > AC > DC. Most electronics ultimately convert AC back to DC (e.g. a laptop's power brick can draw AC from this thing and converts back to DC to input into the laptop)

I've used the Targus Mobile Power Inverter for several months now.

My favorite feature is the two plugs: one is for regular "cigarette lighter" ports, and the other lets you plug into the specialized dc ports common on many airlines.

Some airlines use regular "cigarette lighter" style jacks, while others use this special connector. This thing lets you use both without any extra cables and very little extra weight.

The price is about half of some of the higherend models, but I haven't had any problems with it. I could only wish it were a little smaller.

A car altnernator creates electricity in DC, so it is DC to AC (and then usually DC once within the device you are using, like a laptop or ipod).

I think car makers are slowly putting AC jacks into their cars. I know one of the trims of the new Toyota Matrixs (Matrices?) have at least one AC jack in them.
