Below you may find an (annotated) bibliography of material devoted to the tactical and operational planning problems that arise in the assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The goal of this web page is at least threefold:

to provide the uninitiated an opportunity to become acquainted with the field in a relatively easy way,
to have an overview of the field and the direction in which it is evolving,
to facilitate the classification of problems and models by providing a common typology,
to allow quick retrieval of papers dealing with some (machine) specific problem.
This material is divided into:
journal publications,
theses,
conference proceedings,
unpublished working papers.
Each of these categories is sorted alphabetically by last name of the first author. Each entry in the list is followed by a short description. The common framework for this description arises from the survey paper "Production planning problems in printed cicruit board assembly" (see http://www.cwi.nl/donet/publications.html). More precisely, each description contains some or all of the following pieces of information (we refer to the survey for details):
production environment:

shop layout: decoupled workcells, single assembly line, multiple assembly lines, single machine, ...;
product mix: volume, variety;
setup policy: tear-down, family, partial;
machine characteristics: sequential, concurrent, single head, multiple heads, ...;
problems addressed:
SP1. assignment of PCB types to product families and to machine groups (cells or lines);
SP2. allocation of component feeders to machines;
SP3. for each PCB type, partition of the set of component locations on this board type, indicating which components are going to be placed by each machine;
SP4. for each machine group, sequencing of the PCB types, indicating in which order the board types will be produced on these machines;
SP5. for each machine, location of feeders on the carrier;
SP6. for each pair consisting of a machine and a PCB type, component placement sequencing, i.e. sequencing of the placement operations to be performed by the machine on this board type;
SP7. for each pair consisting of a machine and a PCB type, component retrieval plan, i.e., for each component on the board, rule indicating from which feeder this component should be retrieved;
SP8. for each pair consisting of a machine and a PCB type, motion control specification, i.e., for each component, specification of where the pick-and-place device should be located when it picks or places the component.

Although we aimed (and aim) for completeness, there is no guarantee that your favorite PCB paper is on one of these lists. In fact, we welcome any suggestion for material that should be added to one of these lists.
