PbFree HASL PCB Finish Now Available! One of the most popular
final finishes is known as Hot Air Surface Leveling otherwise
known as HASL. A viable lead free HASL process utilizing
the Nihon Superior SN100CL lead free solder alloy is available.
Testing to date has shown that the SN100CL lead free HASL
process offers superior solderability to the final finishes
on the market today. All of the final finishes available
on the market today have both their merits and demerits.
Many in the board industry are concerned about switching
from HASL to a less forgiving final finish as they transition
to the up and coming lead free era. Our process should ease
these concerns. This process is also directed towards those
who are not completely satisfied with their current final
finish. There are two major lead free solder alloys on the
market today: SN100CL and the SAC alloy. The SN100CL nominal
composition is a stabilized eutectic tin copper . The SAC
305 alloy consists of tin, copper and 3% silver.
The Advantages of SN100CL LeadFree HASL:
A robust process.
Improved shelf life compared to 63/37 (2).
Minimal temperature increase in the solder pot (Solder pot
temp est.
485500¡(ãà°F).
No copper attack (e.g., copper traces, holes on circuit
board).
Minimal stainless steel attack. SAC 305 alloy rapidly attacks
Stainless Steel.
Superior wetting yielding a more uniform and flat surface.
Capable of handling very fine pitch due to excellent wetting.
Compatible with both conventional 63/37 and lead free final
assembly.
More economical (No Silver). PbFree Assembly
An ideal leadfree transition team has trained personnel
in purchasing, inventory management, fabrication and process
control. Purchasing and procurement specialists are versatile
enough to fully understand and track a variety of changing
conventions association with Pbfree assembly. Inventory
personnel understand differences between eutectic and leadfree
components. Particularly, they are attentive to the adverse
consequences of mistaking one for the other. They also maintain
stringent control over incoming vendor components from a
variety of supplier bases; and once in house, segregate
those components and maintain proper inventory of them.
There are differences between eutectic and leadfree assemblies,
not only in terms of different thermal profiles, inspection
and rework criteria, but also because leadfree assemblies
tend to have latent defects that are absent in eutectic
assemblies. One of those defects is ¡(°àh,whisker formation.¡(±à`,
This phenomenon is created when tin whiskers or electrically
conductive, hairlike structures grow outward from tin, zinc,
gold, cadmium, indium or silver.
Solder joint embrittlement is created over time as a result
of a latent defect. This is due to the absence of lead in
the joint, which makes the remaining alloy hard. Over time,
this hardening alloy can show signs of cracking and microcracking.
Signs of fatigue are more prevalent in PCBs subjected to
motion or vibrationbased applications. This latent defect
places greater pressures on process controls and require
tighter assembly rework and inspection tolerances.
Leadfree solder and assembly reliability is achieved if
trained specialists carefully implement several process
requirements. There are a number of variables that must
be taken into consideration to achieve leadfree solder joint
reliability. These include alloy melting temperature; alloy
wetting and surface tension properties; solder balling and
bridging potential increases; and cosmetic effects of flux
at higher reflow temperatures.RoHS LeadFree Test and Inspection
Legislation is driving the need for leadfree and environmentally
friendly material sets in the printed circuit board industry.
The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive
commonly know as the 'leadfree' directive. This directive
restricts the usage of Lead, Mercury, Cadmium Hexavalent
chromium (Chromium VI or Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls
(PBB) , Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).
This new material set means questions about the reliability
of products, process issues, and many other considerations
that have been long established for tinlead solders. In
general leadfree is a less forgiving process, which means
that defect levels are likely to increase and the need for
inspection for process control and defect containment will
increase.
The creation of www.pcbsino.com....leadfreetest.com was
to help customers with gathering leadfree /RoHS data, paper/articles,
events, resources, etc. This website is a compilation of
what is happening in leadfree in the industry and is a great
resource for customers of all types. This valuable resource
is available as a free service to our valued customers and
to others with an interest in leadfree.

impact on PCB purchasing.
Preface
To date, volumes have been written about the European Union's
(EU) directive on Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS),
WEE, and requirements for leadfree (Pbfree) products. You
can go to virtually any search engine and put in the words,
"Pbfree requirements" or "RoHS" and
get a considerable amount of definitions, analysis, and
general articles.
So, rather than reinventing the wheel, we'll concentrate
on basic information you, as a buyer or purchasing agent,
can use to make your life easier. The following information
helps you to understand some of the key particulars involved
in selecting Pbfree PCBs and their associated costs.
What's Your PCB Application?
If the Pbfree PCBs you are purchasing are to be used in
medical, industrial, military/aerospace, consumer, computer,
or network systems, the Pbfree PCB requirements for each
of these system applications are vastly different from one
another with different costs and delivery times. So, it's
a good idea ato get a sound understanding of the Pbfree
PCB design, fabrication, and design steps associated with
your particular PCB application.
Higher Temperature Requirements for Lead Free Process
The higher temperatures used for Pbfree processing and rework
place greater stress on components and boards, which is
further aggravated by cumulative heat exposures. The combined
reflow and rework heat cycles can result in a single assembly
being exposed to as many as five thermal heat excursions
that includes two reflow passes, a wave solder pass and
two localized heating passes for rework.
The internal package structure within components and PCBs
must survive all processes and still provide longterm reliability.
Component effects include increased moisture sensitivity
levels (MSL), thus resulting shorter exposed floor life,
while PCB laminates must minimize internal layer delamination,
via cracking and board warpage.
SMT first pass reflow processing typically has the following
characteristics:
Four to six minute cycle times.
Temperature ranging from 230 to 250oC for joints and body
temperatures.
